Biography
Dr. Philips completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in Hematology/Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, a National Cancer Institute designated cancer center. After completing a Masters in Public Health at Harvard University in 1999, Dr. Philips accepted a position at the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care to develop the field of genitourinary oncology (prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancer) through collaborations with urologists and radiation oncologists. His efforts included establishment of a genitourinary tumor conference to promote high quality multidisciplinary patient care, and founding an annual urologic cancer symposium. Since 2006, Dr Philips has been involved in the development of the lung cancer multidisciplinary program and participates as a medical oncologist in the lung multidisciplinary tumor board and clinic. Dr. Philips is currently an associate professor at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and a member of the Vermont Cancer Center. He is the program director of the fully accredited Hematology-Oncology fellowship training program whose graduates are all Board Certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology and have successfully pursued clinical and academic careers across the United States.
Research
Dr. Philips' research interests focus on cancer prevention and treatment. He is the principal investigator of the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) for Vermont. His primary area of interest is in conducting clinical trials for genitourinary cancers and lung cancer. He participates in national clinical trials through the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, a National Cancer Institute sponsored cancer clinical trials cooperative group.
